Canoe Trip

It was the last night of our four-day canoe trip in Minnesota’s boundary waters.   There was a magical spot before us, a wooded Island in the middle of the lake.   My wife and I plopped our dome tent on the cliff overlooking the lake to be back in the canoe for an evening paddle.  What an enchanting evening: breathless air, glassy water, brilliant stars, and cricketing bugs.  At one point, we glided past a mother moose with her calf.

Eventually, sleepiness sent us to bed.   But our dreams were shattered in the wee hours of the morning with us being blown toward the cliff and the lake.  Scrambling around, we arrested our flight.  Then we spent a half-hour staking and tying the tent down while small pine trees were snapping and crashing nearby.  The rest of the night, we were buffed by winds and shuddering every time a tree snapped and crashed to the ground.

Later we learned seven tornadoes went by south of us.  Lesson learned: stake and tie down a tent no matter what.

Fresno Adventist Academy needs four stakes to ensure stability and success.  Starting with the fourth stake first, FAA needs quality Seventh-day Adventist Education.  The third stake: adequate funds for tuition assistance.  The second stake: ensure teachers receive the training and resources needed to be successful.  The first stake is ensuring that Jesus is FAA’s core and center.

One day, Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do you say I am?”

Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.  And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.

Point: all parts of the church must be built on Jesus, the Rock.  Therefore, unless FAA is built on Jesus, the Rock, it will not survive no matter what we do.  The gates of Hades will prevail.

Later Jesus gave a stern warning,

“What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world yet forfeit their soul.” I ask, “What good will it be if FAA gains the whole world, but it is not built of Jesus, the eternal Rock?   What good will it be if FAA has the best music, academics, sports, teachers, Career Education program, oranges, finances, and teaching methods if it is not built on the Rock?”

Therefore, let us build FAA on Christ, the solid Rock, and nothing less!  Let not the gates of Hell overcome FAA!
