This summer, my wife and I visited our children and grandchildren. I especially enjoyed our 3-year-old granddaughter, Meilani. I had forgotten how many questions a 3-year-old child can ask. Do you know what the number one question asked? It was “Why?” Then I noticed every response included the conjunction “because.”
Someone asked me, “Why does Fresno Adventist Academy want to help students grow like Jesus grew?” Good question. So, I took time to ponder this question. Using Scripture and Ellen White’s book Education, I look for the “because.” I compiled a list of answers. In the end, one response stood out above all others. The answer is found in Jesus’ last recorded words in the Bible, “He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” (Rev. 22:20) Therefore, why does Fresno Adventist Academy want every student to grow like Jesus grew? Because He is coming soon.
This year, we have another ten months to grow like Jesus grew to be ready for His coming. But how can we grow like Jesus grew? Paul tells us, “Your attitudes, thinking, and actions should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 2:5) In other words, if we want to grow like Jesus, we must be like Jesus.
Last year, we focused on thinking like Jesus by burying ourselves, like Jesus did, in the soil of humble dependency on the Father for everything. Paul wrote, “Jesus, who being in the very nature of God did not consider equality with something to grasp but made himself nothing.” (Phil. 2:6-7) This year we will focus on acting like Jesus. Again, Paul wrote that Jesus took the “very nature of a servant.” (Phil 2:7)
Jesus is coming soon! This should inspire us to get out of bed every day and come to school to prepare ourselves for service to others and Christ, for we have this great hope!
